Like in any language, there are irregular verbs. English has them - to be (am, is, are) - was, were - been. For example in French, 'je suis' could be 'I am' (from etre) or 'I follow' (from suivre). Most verbs follow the er/ir/re conjugations but plenty don't either. You've just got to learn them.
