What does "Big Sur" mean?

The name "Big Sur" is taken from the Spanish who originally caled the area "el pas grande del sur" -- which means "the Big Country of the South." (The area is just south of the Spanish capital of Monterey.) The name was shortened to "el sur grande," and then became somewhat Anglicized to "Big Sur."
