What would America be like if the Europeans were to have never discovered it?

Would the indigenous peoples("American Indians")of the western hemisphere still be living a backward primitive existence? What would their lands be called? I find it quite hard to imagine an America without the important involvement of the early Europeans(Spain,Britain,Portugal,France)
